About The Artist
Jonathan Becker is a mask maker, teaching artist and performer. He began sculpting masks in 1986 while a student in Paris, France. Jonathan has created hundreds of masks for theatre companies, producing organizations, and training programs throughout Europe, Canada, and the United States. His masks are currently touring throughout the world. As an actor he has performed throughout Europe, Asia and the United States and has worked as a member of the SunDance Institutes Playwrighter's Lab, a laboratory founded by Robert Redford to develop new works for theatre and film. Jonathan has appeared as an actor in programs with most of the major symphony orchestras in the U.S. and Canada performing in such venues as Lincoln Center. Since 1988, Jonathan has helped in the development of eleven original plays. He co-founded and was Co-Artistic Director of two theatre companies: Les Senokrates in Luzern, Switzerland and The Brodeur Brothers in Paris, France. ![]() His teaching credits include work as a guest artist in professional theatres, colleges and universities. He has taught young performers in three countries and has been a member of the core faculty at The National High School Institute at Northwestern University since 1990 where he is Associate Director. Jonathan has taught acting and coached young professionals for Beginnings, A Professional Arts Resident Workshop which culminates in Off Broadway Showcases for the participants. As a teaching artist he has recently worked for Disney Theatrical on The Pride Rock Project, an educational outreach program associated with The Lion King and for Bravo, the arts and entertainment cable channel, teaching nationwide workshops in an effort to promote theatre education. Jonathan's expertise in the classroom ranges from offering workshops in mask making and acting with masks to the creation of original material, physical comedy, combat, improvisation and theatre clowning.
