Politico

Politico is the politician of the larval world. This mask thinks it has much to say but says nothing. It likes to be in charge but has nothing useful to contribute. The offerings to the games played tend to lead all the other masks in the opposite direction of success.

This Basel mask is a redesign of a mask originally created in Lucerne, Switzerland in 1989. Jonathan was part of theatre company at that time that was based in Lucerne developing new work. The company was earning its living teaching courses for the public and this larval was born at that time. It is a mask that admonishes the actor to understand form in that the actor must be conscious of the fact the mask sees for its eyes and the actor is seeing out of the mouth of the mask.

Larval masks help the actor to understand how to play form in relationship to how an audience understands the text of action it is seeing. The lesson is that and audience has no more information than what it has learned from the beginning of the performance and that the viewer is interpreting that action through a series of images. The specifics of those images inform the understandings and the performers then build off those understandings to develop the journey they are taking the audience on.
