Stresster

Stresster is in a state of constant surprise. It seems driven by a sense of nonsensical urgent discovery. This mask has a state of being founded in an equal amount of fear and curiosity about everything it encounters. This mask is a combination of a bee, a bird, a prying mantis and a mosquito.

The intent behind the use of larval mask in actor training is multifaceted. The actor is being asked to respond to the mask with a specific body and gestural life based on the form of the mask itself. The life rhythm of the mask, the singular perspective, and the movement qualities are all based on the specific form of each individual mask. The questions of weight (heavy or light), direction (direct or indirect) of movement flow and much more are answered by the mask for the actor.

The larval mask is referred to often as Basel Mask. In the training it is important to speak of the masks as larval however. The name reminds the student of the basic form of development the mask is in and that it is the “play” that the actor is after in the work rather than a sophisticated pursuit of objective.

The Mask was inspired by the mask designs of Trish Leeper.
