The Charlotte Small mask was created in 2012 for Evergreen Theatre in Calgary Alberta Canada. Charlotte Small was the life partner, wife and fellow explorer to David Thompson. Her father was Scottish and her mother Cree. He native heritage was a large part of the reason she was arranged to marry David Thompson since she could translate and trade on her husbands behalf.

Charlotte small was an incredibly strong and powerful woman. Her husbands’ journals seldom speak of his family that was part of his explorations and travels. The often refer to harrowing circumstances, life and death moments and his very difficult adventures. In one instance he speaks of a moment many of the men almost drown and lost horses crossing a swift river. The journal does not mention that Charlotte small made the same crossing with three young children in tow. Charlotte was married for 58 years to Thompson and bore 13 children during that time.

The Charlotte Small mask is an example of the custom mask making services provided by the studio. Mask maker Jonathan Becker works closely with his clients to provide very specific masks designed for performance.

2020 Mask Workshop Welcome!!  Jonathan Becker offers on-site workshops in partnership with The North American Laboratory of the Performing Arts, a small institute dedicated to a broad cultural exploration of the performing arts, the creation of new works, the exploration of fundamental principles and inspiring artists to be agents of change.

The Mansion at 825 East Washing Street is one of Muncie’s greatest architectural offerings.  The beauty and handwork of the structure itself are an inspiration to its visitors.

Mask Making: An Exploration of Expressive Form Workshop – June 16-19, 2020

This workshop explores the entire process and understandings necessary to create an expressive form, a mask that appears to change expression as it moves through space.
