The Charlotte Small mask was created in 2012 for Evergreen Theatre in Calgary Alberta Canada. Charlotte Small was the life partner, wife and fellow explorer to David Thompson. Her father was Scottish and her mother Cree. He native heritage was a large part of the reason she was arranged to marry David Thompson since she could translate and trade on her husbands behalf.
Charlotte small was an incredibly strong and powerful woman. Her husbands’ journals seldom speak of his family that was part of his explorations and travels. The often refer to harrowing circumstances, life and death moments and his very difficult adventures. In one instance he speaks of a moment many of the men almost drown and lost horses crossing a swift river. The journal does not mention that Charlotte small made the same crossing with three young children in tow. Charlotte was married for 58 years to Thompson and bore 13 children during that time.
The Charlotte Small mask is an example of the custom mask making services provided by the studio. Mask maker Jonathan Becker works closely with his clients to provide very specific masks designed for performance.
