The Nelson character half mask gives the illusion that it is kind and confused but in fact has within the temperament of a bully who manipulates the world to his advantage. In the structure of the stories he plays the role of the antagonist. One might equate him to the character of Brigella in the commedia dell’Arte.
Like most bullies Nelson likes to pick on people, torment his victims, psychologically and physically. He’s typically two-faced. Nelson is everyone’s bully. And the reality is that every story needs a bully, someone we love to hate. The bully manifests conflict, provides a target for scorn.
The masks for this show provide for a heightened sense of storytelling and allow the audience to experience the struggle of the characters a deeper personal level.
