The Apu Nahhasapeemapetilon character half mask represents a Kwik-E-Mart owner who is devoted to his work. He has a brother Sanjay and is married to Manjula, his wife. Apu has 8 children. Apu has been heard saying: “ I have asked you nicely not to mangle my merchandise, you leave me no choice… but to ask you nicely again.”
Apu’s random appearance in this episode/play is as logical and necessary as any part of a Simpsons episode. So many decisions are made as to what would be funny, what would take up a little more time to fill out and episode or simply how too complete a gag.
The mask of Apu is a classical archetype that is present many forms of comedy throughout the history of theatre and comic forms of story telling. As is so wonderfully celebrated in the Simpsons we find humorous commentary poked at the immigrant worker so as to reveal to us our preconceived notions and small minded opinions of the other.
