Jack or the Submission mask for Roberta. This theatre mask for the absurdist play by Ionesco is the two noses mask. Ionesco is using masks in this case to highlight the characters submission to societal norms.
Ionesco was a master at ridiculing the mundane and drawing attention to the solitude and insignificance of existence. Jack or the Submission was one of his earlier works and considered to be one of his most innovative as well. He started writing later in life and so his plays reflect the mature perspective of a middle aged poet caught in world that is in constant change rather than constant betterment.
As always the character mask becomes a metaphor, a symbol of transformation, it reveals and comments on our place in society.
