Jack or the Submission mask for Roberta. This theatre mask of three noses was created for the absurdist play Jack or the Submission by Eugene Ionesco. Ionesco is using masks to emphasize the absurdity of human existence. The disjointed aspect of the masks in the play combined with an ignoring of realistic dialogue and realistic conventions highlight this theatre of the Absurd.
Ionesco, a master of ridicule brings us a play in which there is endless commentary of the meaninglessness of life. This is highlighted by a TV that plays an endless steam of commercials and brought home through the character of Roberta who has been prepped to be a Bride and only that in life.
The three noses mask is not just a depiction of how two faced a person can be but takes the commentary one step farther.
