Beekster

Beekster is one of Jonathan’s favorite larvals in the collection. This mask came much later in the mask designs and was heavily inspired by the Muppet Beeker. This mask finds life exhausting and often playfully pointless because it has a hard time finding where it put its eyes.

There is great value in using the larval masks in the mask training for actors. The mask demands from the actor a sophisticated understanding of the relationship that exists between the actor and the character. Once this is clear then the mask requires understandings of what the relation ship between the character and the audience is. The suggestion in the training is that this triad of understanding present awareness is continual in performance.

The larval was born out celebration and the adult desire to return to playful days of childhood. The mask makers of Basel Switzerland originally created this style of mask and when not used in training they are referred to as Basel Masks.
