Kootenai

The Kootenai Appee Mask was created in 2012 for Evergreen Theatre in Calgary Alberta Canada for a production about the life of David Thompson one of north America’s greatest geographers. Thompson was responsible for mapping large portions of Canada allowing for further settlement, the building of the railroads and the opening of trade routes.

Kootenai Apee is a character in this story. He is the Piegan Chief. As the story goes Kootenai sent spies to the Thompsons winter house to learn of his plans and the fort he was in with the intention to destroy it and destroy him. Appee discovered Thompson’s expertise in Star mapping instead and Thompson latter became know as “The Star Man” among the native peoples.

This mask is another example of the mask making skills of Jonathan Becker and his providing of custom made masks to the international theatre community. Through character descriptions and some vintage photos Jonathan arrived at this design in collaboration with the company’s artistic director.
