The Monkey King, or Sun Wukong, is a Taoist and Buddhist figure who although possesses the ability to shape shift is often seen in the image of a white faced Gabon. He is most famously known for his role in Journey to the West,” one of China’s classic novels. The story starts with a challenge given by the Buddha himself. If the Monkey King can reach the ends of the Earth the Buddha shall reward him with the power of the Jade Emperor, Heaven’s ruler. Using his impressive strength, Wukong jumps from one end to the other, where he encounters five pillars. Thinking these signify the edge of Earth and that he has easily won the bet, Wukong confidently leaves a message on the middle column as well as urinating under in a show of boisterous conquest. To his dismay, it is revealed to Wukong that he in fact reached the edge of Budhha’s hand, defacing Buddha. For which, The Monkey King is subsequently imprisoned beneath a mountain and sentenced to five centuries of learning humility on Earth.
