Dead Tecun Mask (no longer offered for sale)
The Dance of the Conquest requires the dancer playing the role of Tecún Umån to wear two masks. This custom theater mask depicts Tecun after he has lost his battle with the Spanish Conquistador Pedro de Alvarado. Accordingly Tecun’s eyes are closed and his body bloodied. This performance has come to represent the acceptance of defeat and the conversion of native peoples to Christianity.
This performance mask is painted with acrylics and washed with color to give it texture. The mask is made of rigid neoprene, is durable and light weight.
