The Nyoman mask is inspired by the mask of this name from the Balinese Topeng Theatre. Nyoman is a friendly and cheerful clown. She is not very bright, is an excellent vocalist and a dancer of some grace. She has passed the age of marriage and this is a constant source of worry for her. This pitiful situation is augmented by constant jokes concerning her search for a young lover and her incessant flirting with members of the audience.
This character half mask was created for a course on Devising Theatre with masks from world culture taught at Ball State University from 2009 – 2018.The mask was commissioned by the students of the course as part of a story they were telling.
The tradition of the Topeng is a rich and powerful one. There are no more powerful masks for performance than the masks created and inspired by the masters of the Topeng. What an amazing world it must be to live in a culture in which there is no separation between life and art.
