Description
The Dalem mask is a design found in the traditional Topeng from Bali. Dalem means Raja or King. This character usually appears fourth in the introductory dances of the Topeng but then later emerges as a main character. The mask represents the qualities of a ruler or hero.
This mask was created as part of collection of masks used to teach a devising class on using masks of world culture to create new theatre. The work was to learn about the cultures and stories of the mask from different cultures and then use the specific information as well as the masks to create new story.
The white in the mask symbolizes purity, cleanliness and a moral upstanding attitude.
