Tan Vu
Tan Vu

Congratulations to Tan Vu, the first winner of Theater-Masks.com Bi-Annual Scholarship. Tan’s work as a young artist advocating for the LGBTQ community and efforts and desires to create a more diverse community in the entertainment industry especially as concerns Asian American artists won him the contest.  Tan is a student at The University of California, Berkley.

Tans essay told his personal story and how that has motivated him to reach toward bringing people together and educate others through his artistry of the suffering some cause others when they do not understand who they are.  His response to world filled with bullies was to want to create empathy rather than anger.  His experiences also led him to expand from the issues of LGBT youth to those of minority populations and the difficulties they face because their faces are not seen in media often enough.

Upon hearing he had won Tan said “Thank you so much for choosing me as the recipient of this years scholarship! I promise to not disappoint you and will continue striving to advocate for my communities through my work!”

It is wonderful to see such young artists working tirelessly to make this world we live in better.

Artists are the keepers of culture and the souls of society that are tasked with bringing people together through the sharing of stories. Tan is well on his way.
